I am a fan of this weapons system, as it forces players to choose between certain weapon types and even particular weapons within that type and how often they want to make use of their powers. There are some classes that benefit from this new weapon selection style than others, but it also gives players the chance to experiment with different weapons and find a mix that suits them best. Some of the most powerful weapons are also the heaviest, meaning players might really have to make sacrifices if they want to use it. There is also a new melee ability that was heavily advertised in promotional material called the 'omniblade'. However, the omniblade ability, in reality, is nothing more than a heavy melee attack, which players won't probably get much use out of on most of the classes. Most classes remain mainly unchanged from the previous game, with a new ability added to each one. As I mentioned before, the exploration element of gameplay is almost non-existent. The planet scanning and flying between star systems of the previous game returns, but everything is put on what is essentially a timer by having the reapers chase the player out of a system before they can finish scanning. And most of the time, a star system will give the player nothing more than a number added to their war assets, with very little context, or an item that someone back on the citadel wanted you to fetch.

The biggest new feature that comes to this game is the multiplayer. This mode is solely co-operative, a team of four being dropped into an area for 11 waves of enemies before being airlifted out. While most waves require the players to do nothing more than kill all the enemies, some of them are objective based, making the players travel around the map to hack a terminal or take out a certain enemy before the time runs out. Players start out rather unequipped, with only basic weapons and access to basic moves. As they play through they can level up and earn money which can be spent on supplies. The game has a store in which equipment packs can be bought with the money earned through matches.

This would all be fine except the game accepts real life money as an alternative to the currency earned in game. This doesn't really sit right with me. While I am outspokenly pro-DLC in games, these types of micro transactions seem to be taking advantage of their popularity to squeeze every extra penny they can out of the consumer. This is all totally optional though, and it's not really a 'pay to win' situation as it never shifts gears into competitive gaming. Playing this multiplayer does increase the galactic readiness meter, forcing players into the multiplayer when they might not want to play it. These players who wish to rush through the multiplayer might end up feeling compelled to pay extra money for an advantage so that they can finish their single player campaign more quickly.

Melee executions are extremely satisfying.

I was forced into multiplayer in this manner and was, at first, resistant to liking it. However, after I beat the game and actually started playing the multiplayer out of a genuine interest I found that it was actually rather enjoyable. Characters are customisable to quite a degree and players can have any number of them at the same time, and the enjoyment gained from getting a rare and powerful weapon from a 'booster pack' was something I'd not felt since I was a kid. Overall, there are extreme positives and negatives to be levied towards Mass Effect 3. The game looks great and the in depth story telling and character development players loved about the first game returns. There are also some great moments during the main game that many who complain about the ending seem to have forgotten about. What's that old idiom: 'it's about the journey, not the destination'. If anyone out there has played the first two games and is now questioning whether to get the third one based on all the negativity on the internet about it, I implore you to ignore all of it and buy the game.

Gameplay:

Shooting mechanics have been refined, although the story is much more linear this time around.

The voice acting is fantastic as always, on top of an excellent soundtrack.

Graphics:

Graphically, its the best looking game in the series.

Longevity:

Multiplayer is divisive but surprisingly fun, on top of a lengthy campaign.

Like I said at the beginning of the article, there is a game in here before the ending, and its a game worth playing.
